Sleeping Soundly and Sustainably “A Girl and Her Mattress”

This article comes from our guest blogger, Kelly-Jo (Lalalocal.com) , a Corporate Social Responsibility Specialist & Blogger. Read her take on our sustainable brand and products.

If you’re anything like me, I’ve never really had to think much about shopping for a mattress until I HAD to. A lover of rest and all that involves curling up in my bed and relaxing, it was time to upgrade and invest in my sleep game. After years of owning my mattress for longer than I would like to admit, I was fully “adulting” and on the hunt for a mattress, but feeling lost on where to go and asking myself all the usual questions: Where to start? How will I get it home? What’s it made of? Will it last? What if I don’t like it? etc...

The idea alone of mattress hunting bummed me out because I couldn’t imagine a more boring shopping experience, and yet such a critical investment when you think we spend nearly a third of our life in bed! Also, having been out of the mattress-loop for years, I quickly learned that a good mattress does not come cheap. Naturally, like most millennials, I put a call-out to my community online for mattress recommendations (the miracle of social media!). And you know what? They didn’t let me down!

After comparing various mattress brands online and asking around, I was referred to Brentwood Home. They were a win from the start – I was sold when I learned that not only is Brentwood Home an artisanal mattress group who hand-make their mattresses here in Los Angeles (my very own backyard!), but they’re also committed to sustainability? Tell me more!

Here’s why this matters:

SOURCING LOCALLY AND RESPONSIBLY
When I’m not immersing myself in my passion project, LaLaLocal.com - a carefully curated LA local travel website/blog on all that is local and lovely to Los Angeles – then I’m working as a sustainability/corporate social responsibility (CSR) specialist. I know what you’re thinking, “A sustainability what?”

Basically, working in the sustainability and CSR space means I support projects and clients (be it brands, businesses, organizations, etc.) helping them source their products/ingredients more responsibly, whether that’s looking at their environmental or social impacts (preventing child labor, addressing health and safety issues, improving working conditions in factories, fair wages, etc.) or helping clients lead more sustainable and responsible business practices engaging in industry initiatives or sustainability/CSR related programs. Naturally, given my line of work, this impacts how I like to shop.

When I learned that Brentwood Homes actually build their mattresses locally in LA and are committed to sourcing natural and non-toxic materials/ingredients, I was intrigued and hopeful. Further, as someone who suffers from dust allergies (believe me, that’s a thing. I know, who knew?), I was keen to better understand what materials would be in my soon-to-be mattress - especially as this was not an investment I was going to take lightly (hello 2018 self-care commitment to me!). Not only that, but I saw that Brentwood Home offer a 25 year warranty on all their mattresses! Yup. 25 years. Ok, let’s not think that far ahead, shall we. I barely know where I’ll be 2 days from now never mind 25 years, but it’s good to know, right?

All this to say, I was further pleased to read that Brentwood Home uses a combination of organic, nontoxic, and natural materials with no chemical retardants, phthalates, ozone depleters, or heavy metals. Additionally, their materials like the 100% natural latex, organic cotton, and foams are certified by the eco-INSTITUT and CertiPUR-US, which basically means we can all sleep safe and sound knowing that the materials in a Brentwood Home mattress have fulfilled strict requirements on the latest state or U.S. standards for emissions, content, performance, and/or durability.

After doing my due diligence, Brentwood seemed like a no brainer, and I couldn’t be happier with my investment! The whole experience was breezy too – from purchase to set-up. My mattress was delivered to my front door in a box (albeit a little heavy), but it was easy to unpack (I did it all on my own #yesshecan), and more importantly, I also have peace of mind knowing that my mattress meets certain environmental standards and also looks good! Yeah, no one really ever gets to see your mattress, I get this, but I wanted something that felt and looked good, and would last – even if it were my own little secret.

Even better? I now also own the Pacifica Gel Memory Foam pillows and it’s as if my head is resting on a legit bed of clouds. My sleep game is now complete!

Thanks to my Ojai mattress and pillows I can honestly rest assured knowing that I’ve done my part to invest in the environment and more importantly, myself. Sweet dreams to me!

Not convinced yet? No problem! Brentwood Home also offers free shipping and returns, with a 120-night guarantee. They’ll even take it back at no cost to you. Don’t lose sleep over it (pun intended), find out for yourself and give them a chance!
